Pet Safety Measures At Christmas

Christmas is a time for happiness, joys, and fun for everyone at home. All family members love to celebrate Christmas with its full zeal and zest. Since our four-legged friends are part of our family, therefore we love to include them in our festivities. We often ignore basic pet safety measures during celebrations and allow them what is strictly prohibited in routine. This relaxation in rules put our pets’ lives in danger.

Here are some top tips to remember at Christmas so that our furry or scaly friends may have as much fun as we do.
  • We usually can’t give our pets as much time as we give on daily basis during Christmas parties and celebrations. It is because we are busy in planning and executing Christmas parties, alluring decorations, and fun activities. Pets are sensitive at heart and they immediately feel the ignorance at our end. Therefore, to save from emotional trauma, we should try to keep their routine as normal as possible. We should not forget to hug them on different times of the day when we usually do.
  • Home decorations at Christmas last for few days and some are weighty and others are light. A few electric instruments are also installed into them. Animals love to explore their environment especially the things they find new around them. These new beautiful glittering decorations at home get waste when our dog or cat pulls them down and becomes the reason of breakage of these costly items. In other cases, such accidents can also injure the pets.  So, keep Christmas decorations out of reach of pets.
  • Vets always recommend: keep your pets in a quiet room when you have a plan to play loud bangs or to use crackers and party poppers at Christmas. Animals often get scared at loud bangs and explosions. Therefore, vets always suggest it to all pet owners.

Emergencies happen every day and you should be prepared to face every misfortune knocking at your door courageously and audaciously. Wise decisions at right time (first aid or rushing to the hospital) can give you successful outcomes. Moreover, you can prolong the life of your lovely pets when you are aware of common pet emergencies. Here I am going to mention some common pet emergencies when pets need immediate attention, care, and treatment from the owner.

Car Accidents:

To imagine the collision of sweet pet with a car can make you upset and uneasy. But reality is, such car accidents take place often that may be minor to fatal. Your instant help can save your dog or cat from bigger mishap or tragedy.

What can you do in such a pet emergency?

  • Try to keep your pet as still as possible after the accident. Any types of movement can be life threatening or cause internal injuries to the animal.
  • If your pet does not move, take a sheet, most preferable blanket and shift your animal over it carefully. Use blanket as stretcher and move the injured pet through it to get him to emergency hospital.
  • Don’t touch open wounds with your hands or anything else. You can just place clean compresses on them and make arrangements to take the injured pet to the emergency hospital.

Constipation:

When your pet is facing big problem in passing out the stool or releasing small stool and less than three times a week that means your animal is having constipation. There are many causes of constipation, but what should you do immediately to take him to the vet. Here is the home remedy that works the best.

Take a glass of hot water and squeeze a lemon into it or dissolve 1/4th to 1 teaspoon of Magnesium Citrate powder (according to the age of your pet). Mix it well and help pet to drink this water. This will give a certain relief to your lovely pet. Of particular note is that water should be as hot as your pet can drink. This remedy can take your pet out of the emergency condition.

Heat Strokes:

Heat stroke is among the common pet emergencies that needs immediate treatment. It may lead to severe health issues in the animals. Heat stroke occurs when environment of the animal is too hot and is living in a closed and narrow area where there isn’t proper arrangement of ventilation. Other reason may include when a dog or cat is left in the car in high temperatures. Signs of heat stroke are heavy panting, difficult breathing, thick saliva, vomits, high grade fever, and bloody diarrhea.

For emergency treatment, you should take your pet in a cool breeze place and allow him to bath under water for some time. For more information, take a look into summer safety tips for pets.

Food Poisoning:

Food poisoning is one of the most common pet emergencies that end up with the best treatment by the vet. Major signs of food poisoning include watery diarrhea, nausea, drooling, mouth irritation, appetite loss, urination problems, and breathing difficulties. Owners of the pets must be aware of the dangers of contaminated food. It is better if you take a piece of poisoned food that you think that led to food poisoning in your dog or cat while taking your pet to the vet. It is also essential to bring into the notice of a vet because different poisons are treated differently.
