Pet Medicine For Canine Arthritis


You own pets, it is inevitable that they need pet medicine at some point in their lives. They might need one time short term treatment when they are young. But they also need pet medicine as preventive measures against the harmful effects of heatworm or fleas.  Pet owners do not want to see their dogs and cats in the pain or suffer from chronic ailments when they age. Every dog has to face the canine arthritis sooner or later as he ages. Aging itself is the major cause of arthritis. A very useful and common pet medicine for arthritis is Deracoxib.
  • It is an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the COX2 inhibitor class that helps to control osteoarthritis-related pain and inflammation and improves mobility.
  • This prescription medicine is available in 25, 75, and 100 mg chewable tablets and can be obtained from a veterinarian.
  • It can be given with or without food, though empty stomach is preferred.
  • Deracoxib is flavored to make it a bit more palatable. These tablets are formulated with a beef flavor.
  • Remember:  Deracoxib cannot be used of the pain control in cats.

Dosage:

Any type of medication should never be administered without the consultation of veterinarian.
  • If Deracoxib is being used for postoperative pain relief, the requirement is 3 to 4 mg/kg/day. The medicine should not continue for more than 7 days.
  • Deracoxib is used for osteoarthritis pain relief and minimum dose is adjusted by the veterinarian. It could be from ¼ of a pill every other day to 1 pill every day.

Precautions and Side effects of Deracoxib:


1. This pet medicine should not be used or if use carefully when your dog is having following health issues such as:
  • Hypertension
  • Allergy
  • Dehydration
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Liver ailment

2. Only the vet can decide that Deracoxib should be prescribed to dogs, already suffering from above mentioned disease.
3. This pet medicine should not be used in dogs weighing less than four pounds or 2 kg.
4. Deracoxib is not recommended for puppies who are under four months of age.
Anorexia and vomiting are the common side effects of Deracoxib.
5. It should be carefully used when dog is already using other medicines.

Always use the pet medicine carefully and only with veterinarian’s prescription.
